The Protein Number Women on GLP-1s Need to Know

If you’re on a GLP-1 — or thinking about starting one — there’s a number worth knowing.

It’s 0.6.

That’s the average daily protein intake, in grams per kilogram of body weight, of women on semaglutide or tirzepatide in a 2025 study of 60 adults. Eighty-eight percent of participants were eating below what their bodies actually need to protect muscle during weight loss.

The protein floor for protecting muscle is 1.2 g/kg — roughly double what most women on these medications are eating.

When weight loss happens at the speed a GLP-1 produces, with appetite suppressed to half of normal and protein intake at half of what the body needs to hold onto muscle, up to 40% of what’s lost isn’t fat. It’s the muscle that keeps metabolism running, hormones balanced, and the weight off after the medication stops.

This is why women stop a GLP-1, regain the weight within an average of 1.7 years, and end up with worse body composition than before they started — less muscle, the same fat or more, a slower metabolism, and a harder fight the second time.

It’s not failure. It’s missing structure.

The fix isn’t complicated, but it does require a system. A protein floor that’s hit every day and distributed across meals so the body can actually use it. Foods that don’t spike blood sugar, because the crash from a spike makes GLP-1 fatigue worse. And a way to eat enough total food when appetite is at 50%, without force-feeding.

Most of the standard “just eat better” advice falls apart on a GLP-1. Chicken breast and broccoli don’t work when the stomach won’t accept volume. Tracking macros doesn’t work when nausea hits. Hitting 100 grams of protein across three meals doesn’t work when only a few bites of each are manageable.

A different system is what works. Instead of forcing 30 grams of protein in one sitting, the Whole GI Protocol spreads it across six eating windows — including mid-morning and mid-afternoon — so the body can actually absorb it, even when appetite is suppressed. Starchy carbs are timed to lunch, not dinner, so blood sugar stays stable without the crash that makes GLP-1 fatigue worse.

This is the 12-week framework built over 12 years of nutrition practice with women managing insulin resistance, prediabetes, and blood sugar stabilization. Eight daily habits, organized into elements, that protect muscle and stabilize blood sugar without counting, restricting, or tracking. It works on a GLP-1. It works without one. It works for women in any phase: starting, optimizing, plateauing, or coming off.

Join the Whole GI Protocol by Friday at midnight and the Protein Floor Cheat Sheet is included free — per-meal protein targets, low-appetite swaps that get to 1.2 g/kg without forcing volume, and the timing pattern that lets the body actually absorb what’s eaten.

The Protocol is designed for women with insulin resistance or prediabetes who need a system that works with appetite suppression, fatigue, and food aversion — whether starting a GLP-1, optimizing one, plateauing, or coming off. Eight daily habits. No counting. No restricting. Just protein anchoring, carb timing, and blood sugar support that protects muscle and keeps the weight off.

Over the next 12 weeks, this community receives two emails a week — every Tuesday and Friday — walking through the issues women are navigating on these medications right now. Real problems. Real data. What the research actually says. What prescribers often don’t mention. And how to handle each one without giving up the medication or muscle mass.

Friday’s email covers the 5 early signs of insulin resistance most doctors miss, and why every woman on or off a GLP-1 should know them.

See you Friday,

Jen

P.S. The Whole GI Protocol is $397 paid in full or 12 payments of $39. The Protein Floor Cheat Sheet bonus ends Friday at midnight.
